Westheimer Peace Symposium
October 1 - October 2
The 2020 Westheimer Peace Symposium celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Westheimer Peace Symposium. The Westheimer Peace Symposium, established in 1991 by a generous endowment from Charles and May Westheimer, is an annual event with four rotating themes: Peace and Nonviolence; Peace and Social Justice; Peace and the Environment, and Peace and the Nature of War. As a result, it is a key reflection of Wilmington College’s Quaker heritage and its core values of peace, social justice, respect for all persons, and integrity. The theme of this year’s anniversary symposium is “Peace and the Nature of War.” The Westheimer Peace Symposium explores this theme through a collaboration with the Wilmington College Peace Resource Center and the Response Project* for a special two-day symposium commemorating the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the first use of nuclear weapons by the United States, entitled “The Nuclear Threat: Past, Present, Future.”
